Our Vision
Chess is the tool. Strategy is the lesson. Life is the game.
Calculated Moves is not your average youth chess program. Using the game of chess, Calculated Moves to teaches youth how to:
- - Think ahead
- - Understand purpose
- - Make intentional decisions
- - Learn from wins and losses
Every chess piece has a role. Every move has consequences. Life works the same way.
Focusing on underserved communities, we provide tools, mentorship, and strategic thinking skills at a stage of life where direction matters most.
Our Executive Director
Father. Brother. Mentor.
Keith Brydie
Keith Brydie is the Executive Director of Calculated Moves, a youth development organization that uses chess to teach strategic thinking, decision-making, and real-life leadership skills. With a deep passion for mentorship and community impact, Keith created Calculated Moves to help young people—particularly those in underserved communities—learn how to think ahead, move with purpose, and apply strategy beyond the chessboard.
Introduced to chess at a young age by his father, Keith quickly recognized the parallels between the game and life. As he taught friends and later youth in schools, churches, and community programs, he saw firsthand how chess strategy could shift the way young people approached challenges, choices, and goals. That insight became the foundation of Calculated Moves.
Keith personally facilitates Calculated Moves programming, delivering workshops, after-school programs, and summer sessions for youth ages 6–18. His approach emphasizes not only how to play chess, but how to translate its strategies into everyday situations—encouraging confidence, accountability, and intentional decision-making.
In addition to his work with youth, Keith is a creative and strategic thinker whose interests span chess, art, and systems-based problem solving. Whether on the board, in the classroom, or in the community, he is committed to creating environments where young people feel seen, challenged, and equipped to succeed.
Through Calculated Moves, Keith continues to build partnerships with schools, churches, community organizations, and funders to expand access to programming that helps shape thoughtful leaders and stronger communities for the future.

Our Community, Our Future
We can shape the future—one calculated move at a time.
Today’s youth are navigating a world that demands critical thinking, adaptability, and intentional leadership. Yet too often, they are taught what to think instead of how to think. Calculated Moves exists to help close that gap by equipping young people with strategic thinking skills that prepare them for real-life challenges—on and off the chessboard.
We believe shaping the future is a collective effort. When schools, families, churches, community organizations, and funders come together around shared values, the impact extends far beyond any single program. Calculated Moves serves as a connector—bringing people together to invest in how the next generation thinks, leads, and contributes to their communities.
This work is about more than chess. It’s about building a future where young people are prepared to move with purpose, learn from setbacks, and make decisions that strengthen the communities they call home.
The FAME Zone Youth Program is incredibly grateful for Calculated Moves and Instructor Keith for bringing chess to our students. Keith is extremely knowledgeable and teaches with patience, enthusiasm, and a genuine passion for the children. He connects with the kids in a meaningful way, making chess both educational and exciting. Our students look forward to his class every week, and we’ve seen growth not only in their chess skills but also in their confidence, focus, and critical thinking. Calculated Moves has been a wonderful addition to our program.

"I would like to take a moment to shine a light on the instructor at the Calculated Moves Chess Program, Keith Brydie. I initially signed up My 2 children in the program, just to keep them busy during the summer months, I never imagined them actually enjoying themselves. Not only did they enjoy themselves, but they looked forward to each session. The logical thinking skills, patience and strategic planning were skills taught by Keith that helped them to not only master chess, but also helped them excel in everyday tasks such as chores at home, schoolwork, and their extracurricular activities including soccer and volleyball. The kids are eager to start their 3rd year in the program and hope to be able to share some of what they learned with others.”
